Food matters, and healthy food should be the foundation for any medical intervention. It is quick and easy to send a patient out of the office with a prescription for blood pressure or diabetes medication, tell them to loose some weight, cut down on their sugar intake and come back in three months. However, it is just as easy to include a prescription for cooking classes, have them follow-up weekly, and personally help them loose weight and decrease their cardio-metabolic risk factors

Prescription Kitchen is a dynamic group medical visit that aims to teach people how to cook healthy foods for any disease process. Patients come to the group for a variety of health related ailments and end up finding a unique community of people who all share the same common goal of getting healthy. During the groups patients share, laugh, and break bread together which has unfounded myriad unexpected benefits that have propelled many of these people forward in their journey towards wellness.?

Prescription Kitchen takes a food first perspective for health. An evidence based, whole foods, plant-centric curriculum focuses on economical choices for healthy eating. Tantamount to recipes and nutrition are culinary techniques. The educational lessons widely vary from basic cooking techniques to fermenting and preserving. Many of the patients have been in or around a kitchen for years, but some never learned the foundations necessary to read labels, shop, prepare and cook the basics for their family.?

With passion, prowess and perseverance, one could teach cooking classes in any setting. This presentation will include the basics of the group visit structure including patient flow, billing, marketing, staffing, as well as an outline for how to implement a billable a coo ...
